Brighton Naked Bike Ride mixes celebration and protest in its eighth year.

On Sunday 9 June the World Naked Bike Ride will return to the streets of Brighton for its eighth annual ride. Up to a thousand “bare as you dare” cyclists are expected to pedal through the heart of the city. Joining protests in over 50 locations around the world, including ten in the UK, the ride celebrates body-powered transport as a positive answer to the problems of car-dominated public space, air pollution, climate change and conflict over diminishing oil resources.

2012 saw the second largest increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide ever recorded, with levels now at 394 parts per million, compared to less than 320ppm in 1960. Emissions – of which transport accounts for nearly a quarter – are continuing to accelerate, pushing the planet toward an irreversible tipping point and catastrophic warming.

This year ride organisers say that, despite the alarming global outlook, there is much to celebrate in Brighton & Hove. Co-organiser, Duncan Blinkhorn, said: “It is exciting to see the progress being made across the city to enable more people to lighten up and get on their bikes. With new cycle lanes along Old Shoreham Road and Lewes Road, improvements to junctions including Seven Dials, cycle contra-flows in the North Laine, accessible training and advice, and 20 mph speed limits, Brighton & Hove is showing other towns and cities what can be achieved.”

He added: “World Naked Bike Ride is the ultimate safety-in-numbers experience. We demonstrate that even with the vulnerability of being naked, together we can feel confident and have great fun cycling in the city. Research shows that if more people cycle, the safer and more confident they become on the road, emboldening others to have a go.”

Alice Pickering, co-founder of Cranks community DIY bike workshop, will be joining the ride for the first time this year. She added: “I’m looking forward to riding bikes together in the buff. It looks like an amazingly liberating and humanising activity!”.

The annual party on wheels is a family friendly part of national Bike Week. Participants are invited to gather at Preston Park (BN1 6DT) from 12 noon on Sunday 9 June, before setting off for a 9-mile “naked sightseeing” protest ride around the city. The event has been cleared with Sussex Police.

Dave, it might be an idea to make the above clear that it applies to
website comment accounts and not NL magazines nor SLC membership
subscriptions!

Also, please be aware that increasing numbers of people want nothing
what so ever to do with Facebook and Twitter, please don’t allow
yourself to be dragged to far into the industry hype surrounding
“social media”, if it’s worth NL / SLC saying it then it’s worth
saying it on your own website.

To clarify:

You can still subscribe to the Magazine, we are only suspending subscriptions to the website, so please do not confuse these two very different subscriptions!

We will publish information on Twitter and Facebook but we will also post it here on our own blog. I agree with Jerry that not everyone wants to get involved with social media. We are free to post what we like here without the involvement and authority of third parties. I enjoy that freedom!

On Friday 26 April 2013 the site suffered a DDOS attack. We have also suffered from a major spam attack with spam user accounts being created and spam comments being left on the site.

The DDOS we can do nothing about until it passes. It has diminished in the last few minutes.

The Spam is easier. I have deleted all the users and all the comments. I have also removed the option to subscribe to the site.

If you were a legitimate subscriber, and we had many of you, sorry about this but you just got erased.

I have no plans to reinstate subscriptions, the preferred method of keeping up with activities is to subscribe to our Facebook page and Twitter feed.
